Interview with J.P. Rodrigues

A Florida product John Paul Rodrigues was born and raised in Tampa and the surrounding area. His hometown is Lutz or Land O' Lakes which is 20-25 minutes outside of Tampa. He started playing soccer at 6 when he played for his first team and continued playing youth soccer. He was a scoring machine playing Center Midfielder and Striker/Forward.

J.P. went to Land O' Lakes High School where he was a starter on the varsity team for all 4 years. His junior year he went from 5'-6" to 6'-1". This did not go unnoticed as he started playing on the back line as a Central Defender/Sweeper. Twice during high school his team reached the Final Four. His freshman year they lost in the State Finals to Fort Myers by a 3-1 score. His sophmore year St. Thomas defeated them on penalty kicks in the State Semi-Finals.
J.P. went to Nashville,Tennessee where he attended college at Belmont University where he was recruited to play Defensive Midfielder. A week or two into his freshman year he was switched to Central Defender/Sweeper for the Bruins. In 2005 he was named Defensive Player of the Year and all-conference first team. Upon completion of college he remained in Nashville playing for the Nashville Metros in the PDL.
In 2006 Miami FC's inaugural season J.P. became the first player drafted with the #1 overall pick. He also received the 1st of his 9 caps with the Guyana National Team. A solid defender and a fan favorite he anchored the defense for the better part of 3 years.
Upon leaving Miami he played for the Orlando Sharks of the Major Indoor Soccer League for the 2007-2008 season. He was awarded a spot on the MISL All Rookie Team as he played 25 games with 30 points and 31 blocks. In 2008-2009 he played for the Milwaukee Wave of the Xtreme Soccer League posting 24 points and 17 blocks as his team went 10-10.
J.P. is currently playing for the Milwaukee Wave who returned to the MISL. They are finishing up the 2009-2010 season where they are in first place with a 9-6 record.

Robert Scorca (RS): Who introduced you to soccer?
JP Rodrigues (JP): My Father, we both share a strong love for the game!

RS: From a soccer standpoint who was most instrumental in your career?
JP: Two people... My father as he has always believed in my ability as a player and has always helped me pursue the dream of playing at a pro level. The other would be my High School Coach Mark Pearson as he pretty much made me the player I am today.

RS: Was there a player or players that you looked up to while growing up?

JP: I was always a big fan of Thiery Henry growing up!

RS: Were you a fan of the Tampa Bay Mutiny?
JP: Yes. I was a ball boy for the Mutiny for like 3 years growing up!

RS: What was it like in 2006 Miami FC's inaugural season, playing with Romario, Zinho and Mario Rodriguez?
JP: It was a great experience to play with such high profile players! Especially as a rookie, Its a pretty cool way to start out your career! I learned a lot from each of those guys!

RS: After leaving Miami FC you played indoor soccer for the Orlando Sharks and the Milwaukee Wave. Which do you prefer and why?
JP: I just love to play the game of soccer! Indoor is a bit more exciting for me as a defender because I am able to really get forward and score some goals were as outdoor my main concern is to defend!

RS: What is the biggest misconception people have of indoor soccer?
JP: I think the main thing that people don't understand about indoor is that the players are very talented! If you take the time to come watch a pro indoor game you will see the talent that some of the teams have. Our team here in Milwaukee is full of very good players, both indoor and outdoor!

RS: In 2009 your teammate Marco Terminesi and you were voted "Hottest Man Alive". Being a straight shooter I would have trouble answering this question, so for the female fans out there who is Hotter, Marco or J.P.? (See Picture to the right)
JP: Marco because he is Canadian!

RS: With Tampa Bay having a club close to home was it hard to decide whether to return to Miami or Tampa?
JP: Yes and no... I have always dreamed of playing back in my home town in front of my friends and family... But Miami wanted me to come back and play and I want to play where I am wanted and respected as a player. The club in Miami believes in me and for that I am happy to be back.

RS: As a defender who is the player that presents your biggest challenge?
JP: Every player I play against presents a challenge but none more than another. I respect everyone I play against and know that we are all professionals and anyone on any given day can be a tough opponent.

RS: How does it feel to be back with Miami FC? What was your biggest factor on returning here?
JP: It feels great... I am back where I began my career. I have played some of my best soccer in Miami FC colors! When I spoke to the coach and GM over the phone and they said they would like to have me return I was very excited and felt like I have unfinished business here!

RS: What is one thing people might be surprised to know about you?
JP: I love cats and have 2 of them!

RS: What was your biggest soccer moment?
JP: Probably receiving the Motorola Man of the Match award for Guyana when we played Cuba to a 0-0 tie in Gold Cup Qualifying. It was my 6th cap with the national team. Its an amazing feeling to step on the field and know you are representing a whole country!

RS: Any words of advice to youngsters who are starting out playing this game?
JP: Three things: Never say never! Hard work alone will get you very far! If you believe it... It will happen!

RS: Is there anyone you would like to thank or acknowledge?

JP: I would like to thank God for blessing me with my talents and for allowing me to do what I love! I would also like to thank my girlfriend Brittany Hipps who means the world to me! Without her support and help I would not be returning to Miami FC.

RS: In closing is there anything you would like to say to the Miami FC fans?
JP: I am glad to be back... And it is time that Miami F.C. gets back to the playoffs! Vamos Miami!

Miami FC re-signs Jarryd Goldberg and JP Rodrigues

Miami FC brings back two important players to the team. Read team release HERE

Fan Favorite Jarryd Goldberg returns to the midfield. One of Miami FC's standout players. Jarryd was born November 13, 1985 in Livingston, New Jersey. Goldberg attended Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and played college soccer at Boston College and Boston University. While at college, Goldberg took part in the 2005 Maccabiah Games, winning a silver medal with the US team.
Robert Scorca recently interviewed Jarryd. To read the piece go HERE

The second player that returns is John Paul "J.P." Rodrigues. JP was with the Blues during the first two seasons of Miami FC's existence playing alongside Romario and Zinho. JP is a Guyanese international soccer player who plays as a defender. Rodrigues has played professionally for the Nashville Metros and Miami FC, and he made his international debut in 2006. JP is currently playing with the Milwaukee Wave

Miami FC has announced that there will be other additions to the roster this week among other interesting information.

Miami Ultra President Pieter Brown wrote a great post called "Miami FC Good and Bad", it's about the current criticisms Miami FC parent company Traffic Sports is receiving by fans. Be sure to check it out. It all stems from the announcement of an Academy and fields proposed by Traffic in Ft Lauderdale. Many soccer fans would like MLS to return to South Florida and see this move by Traffic as a hindrance to their dreams. My recent blog post on this same subject see it HERE shed over 50 comments. My opinion is that this move is a positive thing for Soccer in South Florida. MLS is not going to come any time soon. We need to come to terms with that and support Traffic's willingness to commit. An Academy means we will see our future players develop right here in our hometown. It's time for true Soccer Fans to get behind this and join supporters groups, such as the Ultras. Go and Join them HERE

Miami Soccer Fan has also re-started their Spanish Language site. Be Sure to check it out! I will be translating for the site but if you are interested in contributing please contact Pieter Brown at the site.

Interview with the newest Miami FC player, Bryan Perez

Bryan Perez is the newest member of Miami FC. His journey started in Costa Rica. At 6 or 7 years Bryan was enrolled in C. D. Saprissa's Futbol Academy where he played Attacking Midfield a position he would play for most of his career. Saprissa is Costa Rica's most successful futbol program. At 11 is was chosen to be a member of Saprissa traveling youth club.

This was not to be as his family moved to South Florida and he played for Glades Middle School. He went to Killian High School where he twice lead the team in scoring.
After high school he continued his education and soccer career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he played Attacking Mid/Forward. he ended his career there as the teams all time leader in goals (29), points (70), shots(160), and games played (78).
He is a huge fan of Walter Centeno who plays for C.D. Saprissa and the Costa Rica National Team.

Robert Scorca: Who was most instrumental in your development as a player and a person?
Bryan Perez: My parents have played a huge part in my development as a player and definitely as a person. They were always there for me in the good and in the bad. Victor Pastora, Rick Benben and Fred Schliting were coaches throughout my soccer career that taught me the game.

RS: What was your biggest soccer moment?
BP: I had many big soccer moments in my club team and in my college team but if I had to pick I will pick the one with my club team. I played for Renegades from the age 13 to 16. I was a big factor in why Renegades were winning and had success. As the club got bigger they were more interested in bringing in the best players than making a team. At 15 years old I started losing my spot and my confidence. I started having problems with the team and was thinking of leaving when I was 16. I departed the club under less than friendly terms. Victor Pastora found out and thank God, he was forming a team in West Kendall in my age group. We formed a good team with chemistry and humbleness. We made it to the State Championship and it was against the team that I had problems with, the Renegades. It was an intense game because it was not just for the championship but to prove that a team is made with more than just talent. We played in front of a lot of people and it showed how much this game meant. We scored and were on top, and we got a red card with 20 minutes left. Coaches Julio Perdomo and Victor told me, you made that team now destroy it! I defended and gave it my all. We than became the champions of Florida. I can not find word that describes the feeling of winning that game. That is a feeling I'm never going to forget.

RS: When Costa Rica plays the United States who do you cheer for? Which national team would you rather play for, Costa Rica or the United States?
BP: I cheer for Costa Rica. I am often asked who I would rather play for. Even though the United States is a place that made me and opened doors for me my heart is with Costa Rica and I would play for Costa Rica.

RS: Do you have any superstitions or game day rituals?
BP: I have a few. I can't play without taking a shower before I go to the game even though I showered before.

RS: You played for the University of Missouri-Kansas City. What will you miss most about your time here?
BP: I'm going to miss the moments I had there with my friends and teammates. There I learned how to survive and become a man. I met special people there that I'm always going to have in my heart.

RS: What do you feel will be your biggest adjustment from the college game to the pro game?
BP: Definitely the speed of play, but that is something you pick up quickly.

RS: Did you follow Miami FC before you left for college or while you were in college?
BP: I did follow Miami FC but never attended any of the games. I even played a scrimmage against Miami FC in 2006. Victor coached a select group against Miami FC's reserve players.

RS: How much did returning home factor in your decision to play for Miami FC?
BP: A lot, it made my decision real easy. Starting my professional here in Miami is a dream. This is the city where I grew up.

RS: How did Miami FC and you get in contact before they signed you?
BP: Coach Victor and I stayed in contact while I was in college. After I was not picked to be in the MLS Combine my interest in Miami FC grew. After a few phone calls I decided to return from Kansas City.

RS: Do you have a nickname? If not I advise you to come up with one. If not I am sure the Miami Ultras (Miami FC Supporters Group) will give you one to use in their chants.
BP: I get called BP and Negro.

RS: Anything you would like to say to the Miami FC fans?
BP: I would like to say that I am going to work hard to show my best, and for Miami FC to win games and hopefully win a championship.

RS: Any closing thoughts before we close out this interview?
BP: I want to thank you for doing this interview, and the organization for giving me the chance in the Miami FC family. I am looking forward to a great season and a great experience.

Traffic to take over Ft Lauderdale Stadium? Report says they would build Soccer Academy and Fields...

For those that question Traffic's commit- ment when it comes to Miami FC, The Sun Sentinel wrote an interesting piece about the Ft Lauderdale Baseball Stadium, the one that the Baltimore Orioles used to use as a Spring training facility. (Next door to Lockhart Stadium)
The report indicates talks between Traffic and Ft Lauderdale have been going on for sometime.

Sarah Talalay writes:
Earlier this month, Traffic Sports, which owns and operates the Miami FC soccer team, made a pitch to city commissioners to operate the stadium and redevelop it as a soccer academy that could be used by the pro team and the community.

Aaron Davidson, Traffic vice president of sales and marketing and Miami FC president, said Traffic would fully fund the transition of the baseball stadium and surrounding practice fields for soccer. He reminded commissioners of the history of soccer at the complex. Next door Lockhart Stadium is the former home of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Miami Fusion, and Miami FC played half its games there last year. The team is in discussions about playing all its 2010 games at Lockhart.

"In pro soccer, you usually look to develop your players from the youth up in the same venue or near the same venue as your team practices," Davidson said. "Depending on where the FAA wants to go with that land, there might be an opportunity to develop a much larger complex with Lockhart."

The idea appeals to city officials because of the need for soccer fields.

"We've got soccer programs throughout the city looking for more field space," Seiler said.
Full article with video HERE

Could this mean Soccer is here to stay in South Florida? Perhaps this is the reason for the slow start with Miami FC? Will the Strikers name be revived? Is Lockhart Stadium part of the deal? We hope to get more information on this in the days to come.

Ochocinco and his Football (Soccer) friends, Beckham, Ronaldinho, etc

I'm sad I sat on this for 5 days while waiting for some " Important information " that never came. Since then The Offside jumped on this. Last time I wait for anyone! So here it is:

Are you Addicted to Twitter? Someone that's a self confessed addict is Miami native and Cincinnati Bengal Player Chad Ochocinco

I started to follow Ochocinco after I heard he supported Miami's World Cup Bid and realized he was a Football (Soccer) Fan. Chad never fails to mention the beautiful game in his tweets and just last week he bombarded twitter with some real cool pictures of himself with famous Soccer stars. Be sure to check out the original pictures and leave a comment for Ochocinco (links under the pictures). Let him know how cool he is for loving the king of all sports.

Chad also mentioned something about playing for a team in Spain during the NFL off season and said it was thanks to Thierry Henry, but Chad never specified. I'm curious to see what he meant. We will see if we can get him to show up to a Miami FC game. As you can see he already has his own Jersey! Vamos Miami!

Breaking News: Miami FC Get Guardiola

Forget Dream Team… Miami FC Snatch Pep Guardiola From Barcelona

In an announcement that shocked the entire soccer world, Barcelona coach quit his position at Barcelona in order to take over the reigns at MiamiFC. This comes as a surprise to various fans of the club as he was getting ready to sign a new contract with the Catalans.

"I think I reached my peak here and it is time to move to greener pastures. They were really close to getting a franchise in Miami so that must mean something.

"If it's good enough for Romario, it's good enough for me," said the coach in reference to his former Dream Team mate.

Guardiola is ready to tackle a league as competitive as the NASL with a roster of stars that Miami FC is getting from all over the world. He was also impressed with the commitment the club has towards winning as well as the immense following that they have in South Florida.

This became apparent after they were able to have more people attend in five home games last year than the Florida Marlins did in their entire home schedule.

"The ambience at (Sun Life) Stadium will be incredible. To have 75,000 screaming fans will remind the fans of the old Dolphin days," says a source that would like to remain unidentified. Also to have a coach like Guardiola aboard it vital to the growth of a franchise and a community as well.

"Miami FC is a challenge for me as a coach said Guardiola. The team looks like they are on the edge of doing big things, there might be one or two signings that will make this team not only a threat in the league but also in Abu Dhabi."

He has also made it clear as to who his first signing will most likely be- Samuel Eto'o.

Details of the contract have not been disclosed but he is currently getting his B Class license to driver school buses and vans.

Friday, February 12, 2010

Another one bites the dust, Jack Traynor to AC St Louis

AC St Louis signs Jack Traynor. For details go HERE
Traynor was drafted in the second round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls, but was not offered a contract by the team.
After an unsuccessful trial with Aalesunds FK in Norway, Traynor signed with Miami FC of the USL First Division. He made his professional debut on April 26, 2009, coming on as a substitute in Miami's game against Rochester Rhinos.

I haven't really kept count but I believe this is the third player Miami FC has lost to other NASL teams. The first was Zourab "Zee" Tsiskaridze who has signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Then it was Aaron King who will now play for rivals Tampa Bay Rowdies!

We continue to hear the progress of other teams in the league, many setting up pre-season games versus MLS teams... Fans are happy with the announcement of Zach Kirby's return, but so far we only know we have 2 players on the roster and no coach announcement as we don't know if Zinho will be returning. We hope Miami FC can start signing players soon before they are all taken from under their noses and we are left with a High School squad.

Invitational Tryouts
In case you didn't know Miami FC is Holding Invitational Tryouts right now at Ted Hendricks Stadium, beginning Feb. 12 and ending Feb. 14.

Open tryouts will take place on Feb. 20 and 21 at Weston Regional Park. For more information visit www.miamifc.com, or register at the following link.

Miami FC Signs Players, USSF Div 2 Logo revealed and Edmonton to NASL

With the release of the USSF Division 2 schedule the "Blues" have announced the signing of 2 players.

Fan favorite Zach "Beowulf" Kirby returns to lead in the defense. Zach was solid in the back effectively neutralizing attacks. "Beowulf" as the fans called him, was elected Miami Ultras Fan Club Player of the year. His signing answers what most Miami fans anxiously awaited, the signing of players as the inaugural match is less than 2 months away.

Kirby grew up in Marietta, Georgia and played college soccer at Boston University from 2003 to 2006. He was the 2006 America East Defender of the Year. Kirby was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft by Los Angeles Galaxy, and was offered a contract, but was released in order to make roster room for Golden Balls himself David Beckham. Kirby has played for the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL Second Division, the Atlanta Silverbacks of the USL First Division in 2008 and Miami FC.

Miami FC has also announced local Miami product Bryan Perez who comes from the University of Missouri Kansas City. Bryan is a forward who finished his career as the UMKC school record holder in goals (29), points (70), shots (160) and games played (78) Perez started all 78 games. Bryan was Captain of his Killian High School side as a senior. With youth on his side we hope Bryan will make an impact up top where Miami FC is in need of some magic.

Be sure to check out the Miami FC site as we are told many more announcements will be made in the days to come.

In other news the USSF Div 2 logo is out. Check it out below.

NASL News via other sites has an interesting piece on the addition of an Edmonton team to the NASL. It further makes the case that NASL is here to stay as they are looking at 2011 and beyond.
Sources within NASL tell us this is just the beginning. I've read all over that the NASL website is still a little weak if compared to the USL site. But I'm told its a work in progress. Official announcement should be out today.

One time Miami Fusion player goalkeeper Dusty Hudock was named player # 16 in the top 2 players of the decade in USL. Read more HERE

The End of MLS Miami? Marcelo Claure meets with Miami FC and FC Tampa Bay

Reliable sources tell us Marcelo Claure (Brightstar) one time MLS Barcelona Miami bid head and Aaron Davidson, President of Miami FC met Thursday at 9 AM at Traffic Sports USA headquarters in Miami.

It is known Claure has already met with FC Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Claure
, frustrated after his Major League Soccer adventure and fed up with Don Garber, has been itching for involvement of some sort in Florida Soccer for sometime now and has seen the excellent signings and progress Tampa has made so far this year. Tampa seems like a better investment for now, pending whatever Miami FC could muster up in the next months before the start of the USSF Div2 Season. (A NASL and USL combined league)

Signs indicate Claure has agreed to collaborate with both Tampa and Miami teams though details of the deal if any are not set in stone.

It's a positive sign for Soccer in Florida since we know Marcelo Claure has the resources and know how to make a great contribution to Soccer in this state. But questions still remain... Is any hopes of MLS now dead in the state of Florida? Claure was thought Miami's best hope for MLS but sources tell us he, like many other investors cringe at the thought of MLS's current Soccer monopoly (Single entity system).

More details as this story develops.

About this nonprofit:
You can help the victims of countless crises, like the recent earthquake in Haiti, around the world each year by supporting the American Red Cross, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need around the world.

U.S. Men's National Team defender Jonathan Bornstein’s last gasp goal against Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying aided Honduras in their quest to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and now he’s hoping the shoes he wore that night will give a bigger assist to relief efforts benefiting Haiti.

Bornstein has autographed and donated the shoes he wore during the historic match for an online charity auction on eBay, with 100 percent of the money raised to be donated to the American Red Cross to aid in their relief efforts in Haiti.

The auction begins today (Friday, Jan. 22) and will run through Wednesday, Jan. 27.

“The devastation and suffering in Haiti is a tragedy for everyone,” said Bornstein. “One of our teammates, Jozy Altidore, is the son of Haitian immigrants and still has many family members there. It’s heartbreaking to see what is happening, and we hope to be able to help in any way we can.”

Authorities estimate that the devastating earthquake that struck near the capital of Haiti has affected three million people. Hundreds of thousands are feared dead; many more people are injured or without basic supplies or shelter. The Red Cross is part of an enormous relief operation in Haiti following the massive earthquake there on January 12. It will be a long-term recovery effort and the Red Cross will be there throughout.

Fans interested in donating directly to the relief efforts can text the word HAITI to 90999 to contribute 10 dollars to the Red Cross or visit RedCross.org to make a donation.

Hinchas de Poesia, Odes about the Beautiful game and more...

Football is a sport of passion. Its like an octopus with tentacles extended in everything from politics to sex, the ruler of all sports on this planet. The beautiful game inspires many things and in this case poetry. A few local and New York based writers, poets and perverts have come together to give us Soccer Poetry for the masses. I give you Abel Folgar and Yago S. Cura and their Hinchas de Poesia. (Fans of Poetry)

Why Hinchas de Poesia?
Abel : Hinchas de Poesia is an online literary/arts journal begun by Yago S. Cura in 2009 and edited by himself out of New York City and J. David Gonzalez in Miami. Their aim is to bring to the current fold modern American writers and artists utilizing a broad interpretation of the Americas, from the farthest floe claimed by Canada to the last human post of the Patagonia.

Yago: Abel couldn’t have stated it better. The impetus for the bringing together of the Americas came from Jose Martí and his essay, Nuestra America (1891). In it he says something like there hasn’t been invented the prow which can tackle the clouds of ideas (“No hay proa que taje una nube de ideas”). We wanted Hinchas to be a mongrel enterprise, so that is what we emphasized. But, then Abel came up with the slogan, rabid fans of poetry for casual fans of life, and that also made a lot of sense and sounded much cooler than what I came up with.

Who is involved in this devious scheme?

Abel: the editors are Yago S. Cura and J. David Gonzalez.

Yago: We are all Florida International University. blue-table refugees. Back then, the tables had no die-cast sunbrellas so we would not go to class, sit out there, and work on our champion tans. We are all Miami boys deep down inside; I myself am a Souswesero (Slang for South West Miami) Hammocks Jr., Sunset Sr., F.I.U., and then I jetted. And all three of us have had experiences with the stellar F.I.U. Creative Writing program, especially a professor there, Campbell McGrath.

Why Football (Soccer) related poems?
Abel: Yago’s been a dear old friend from my college days at FIU and aside from common written interests, fútbol is something we’ve both enjoyed our whole lives. Especially when I get to chide him about the Argentine side and their respective club dramas. Maradona’s been excellent cannon fodder for many years. And that’s fine because he’ll give me grief over Venezuela never making a Cup (yet) although my first word was “gol” which I can credit to TV-sitting at a very early age much to my mother’s dismay.

Yago: Because my pops is a Boca Juniors fan, I grew up trying to distance myself from the beautiful game. But, it was always in my family. My cousin Mike went on full scholarship to play goalie for DePaul. And my Tio Pinino and Pops are like two walking Almanacs of soccer. I mean my Pops started going to la Bombonera when he was like eight, and Pinino’s been a homicidal River Plate for ages.

How many poems, what other subjects?

Abel: I guess we both tackle many subjects in our writing, to me poetry’s always been closely related to the world of photography, where a particular incident or moment is captured and interpreted artistically. Personally I challenge myself to write about certain things while still writing about events, both biographical and not, that occur at the moment.

Yago: Abel, doesn’t know it yet but he is going to help me move these zines like hotcakes. Think of us as the Luke Skywalker’s of zine manufacture. We gonna be selling these things out our trunks when the World Cup rolls around. I don’t think either of us know how many poems this will ultimately comprise. We just want to keep the impetus we got going writing odes to fútbolistas. And, if we can sell a couple of zines whilst doing that then it means the American Dream is still intact (Yes, that’s right, the American Dream is on the line here folks, so Abel and I can touch the sky!).

Was this a ploy devised to get you laid?

Abel: Some people pick up guitars or go to law school. I chose to write poems. In retrospect, I should’ve picked up a guitar and gone to law school to help out in that department.

Yago: I am married to a ravenous Panda which has advised me to answer this question with a N/A. However, chicks dig fútbolistas its common knowledge.

What Football (Soccer ) teams or leagues do you follow?

Abel: I’m an avid follower of the sport but I seem to gravitate towards classic matches and players. There’s something about the myth of the sport that lends itself well to poetry. I enjoy writing these odes to big names of the sport because I can have fun with the factual material, for example, in my ode “Ode to Roger Milla, the Comedian” I use the factual goal he scored against Rene “El Loco” Higuita’s keep in the ’94 Cup, which was a phenomenal piece of being in the right place at the right time that ended in disaster (for Colombia) humorously juxtaposed with the idea that maybe Milla told jokes to the entire Argentine side to distract the Albicelestes to defeat in the opening match of Italy ’90. I usually follow Ajax, Inter and Manchester United, and solely to piss off my Peruvian friends I check out their season and root for whichever last place team is there. Same for my Argentine friends, nothing gets a party going like saying Racing’s gonna go all the way.

Yago: My heart is celeste and white, but I will always big up any player on any team that deserves respect. I like Barça because to not like Barça is not necessary. Watching them is like watching those Super Bowl commercials in the 80’s when the Pepsi machine fought the Coke machine for dominance of the soft drink kingdom. For better or worse, Barça is slick and their shit don’t stink. So whiff it in, haters! All seriousness aside, I really like watching Messi play is the real reason I like Barça. My Pops loves Manchester City because Carlos Tevez plays for them. I like a lot of the Argentine club teams (of course) because I know the most about them. However, I am not crazy about Boca, but they have had all sorts of legends rep them. In fact, the majority of the players I have written odes to have played for Boca. I guess that’s saying a lot, and maybe it’s just a coincidence. I moderate a soccer league at the Harlem YMCA and I got to say, most of the African teams are amazing to watch. Even if they don’t have the resources, they muster through because the beautiful game is eminent and that’s just enviable!

A message to all the boys and girls out there?

Abel: Hinchas de Poesia encourages submissions to the site www.hinchasdepoesia.com and Yago’s blog, http://spicaresque.blogspot.com/ is a good read. The journal has an actual tactile publishing entity, Hinchas Press, that publishes limited edition zines/chapbooks. Of interest to you and your readership would be our chapbook collaboration, BESTIAS INBERBES (Beardless Beasts) , which is a collection of ten odes to fútbolistas, five each and the forthcoming collaboration IL CAPOANNONIERE, also a collabo of ten odes. These are available locally at Books & Books in Coral Gables, from myself and from the website for a measly five dollars US. Thank you and I’d like to see more fans at the Miami FC games.

Yago: Yes, you can either purchase a zine over the Internet, through our website. We have a paypal account set up. Or, you can send me a check or money order (made out to Yago S. Cura) for five bucks to the Invincible Court, 112 W 138th St. #5D, NYC, NY 10030. And, we are always looking to collaborate with other writers, so if you have some odes of your own then please get in touch with us. And if you are ever in New York City on a Wednesday night, from 7-9, or a Sunday afternoon, 12-2, then please come down to Adam Clayton Powell and 135th (2/3 to 135th) and scrimmage with the Harlem YMCA Indoor Soccer League. It is $12, but it’s worth it.
